"Notes Towards the Definition of "Jewish Culture" in Contemporary Europe"

At a speech in London in 1999, the director of the American National Foundation for Jewish Culture declared that "Being Jewish today means, most of all, the identification with Jewish culture. Jewish culture has replaced the synagogue, has replaced Israel, and has replaced philanthropy as to become the major Jewish concern. This constitutes a major shift in Jewish identity and has major new multidimensional possibilities, particularly because it is not tied to institutions." The purpose of this lecture is to open up this statement for discussion--by describing some of these new European phenomena and by critically analysing the practical and theoretical implications.

Prof. Jonathan Webber, who is currently a Fellow at Collegium Budapest, holds the UNESCO Chair in Jewish and Interfaith Studies at the University of Birmingham (UK). He is a social anthropologist interested in Jewish identity, and among his publications is the editor of "Jewish Identities in the New Europe" (London, 1994) and "Auschwitz: A History in Photographs" (Oswiecim and Bloomington, Indiana, 1993).
