Az előadás témája: What does it mean to be Jewish? How Russian and Ukrainian Jews conceive of their Jewish identity and their Jewish future.

In the last two hundred years, parallel to the secularization of European society, Jews have confronted two challenges: 1) do emancipation and modernization demand a renovation of Judaism, and, if so, what it should be; 2) can Judaism, renovated or not, be divorced from "Jewishness" and thus preserve Jewish people and culture, if not Judaism, in secular contexts? For about a decade Jews in the former Soviet Union (FSU) have been free to address these questions and decide for themselves what being Jewish means and whether they want to "be Jewish." Aided by foreign "ethnic and religious entrepreneurs," they can build Jewish institutions and a Jewish public life for the first time in over 70 years. At the same time, they are free to emigrate. Based on the largest interview project ever undertaken among Soviet/post-Soviet Jews, this talk will trace developments in the FSU since 1991 and describe and analyze how Russian and Ukrainian Jews conceive of Jewishness. It will compare their ideas to conceptions of Jewishness outside the FSU and point to the implications of these comparisons for FSU and world Jewry.
