April 5, Shabbat, 11 a.m.: Dvar Torah held by our special guest from Germany, Rabbi Pinchos Sack, teacher at Beit Midrasch d'Berlin. Followed by a lecture held by Gabor Balazs (Bar Ilan University, Israel and Arachim) on "The problem of discrimination in Jewish law". He will discuss the issue of discriminating non Jews in halakha, a point often mentioned for instance by antisemite web sites. The lecture will be based on text reading, using sources from the Talmud, and their interpretation by rabbi Menachem ha-Meiri.

April 8, Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Lecture by Victor Karady (Central European University, Budapest and research director at CNRS, Paris) on the historical diversities within the Hungarian Jewry in the 19th and 20th centuries (migration, language, religious attitudes, social structure, demography, etc.). Victor Karady is the author of a high number of books about modern European Jewish sociology and social history, including the problems of identity, and the choice of names. (The lecture is held in Hungarian.)

April 11, Friday night, 7 p.m.: kiddush and Indian dinner. It has been a tradition in our community to have dinners presenting the gastronomical traditions, as well as the history of Jews of different countries and regions. The country chosen as the "topic" of our first dinner was Mexico, and Dov Levy spoke about the marranos that used to live there. The second country was South Africa, and rabbi Shalom Hurwitz told us about the history of Jews in South Africa, and the role they played within the life of the country and in the demolition of the appartheid. This time Dov Levy is going to explain us the halachic status of the "lost tribes" (the Bene Israel group) found in India. Here you can find some preliminary information about the Jews in India. The price of the dinner is HUF 1500 which includes also a little bit of donation to the Pesti Shul.
