The Role of Language in the Shaping of History
Please join us on Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at 7 p.m., at the Visegrádi street synagogue (1137. Budapest, Visegrádi utca 3.).
The lecture will be given in English.
Abstract:
Contrary to the well-known sociological principle that language is inevitably the product of society, the Torah makes it quite clear in a number of places that language creates realities. In so doing, Jewish tradition has been supplied with a very powerful theory, not only about the nature of language itself but also about the relationship between God and humanity and about how Jews can interpret Jewish history. This lecture will explore some of the fascinating texts relating to this subject and in particular analyse the extraordinary phenomenon of the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language in modern times.
Jonathan Webber is the UNESCO Chair of Jewish and Interfaith Studies at the University of Birmingham (England); in 2002 he was a Visiting Fellow at Collegium Budapest. He is a social anthropologist interested in Jewish identity, and among his publications is the editor of "Jewish Identities in the New Europe" (London, 1994) and "Auschwitz: A History in Photographs" (Oswiecim and Bloomington, Indiana, 1993).
