The lecture surveys Hungarian literature on Jewish themes in the post-1989 period, and points out the differences -- in approach, tone, emphasis -- between these works and literature on the same subject published in the previous era. The lecturer will also examine changing attitudes toward Jewish identity as reflected in Hungarian literature, as well as continued rejection by some writers of the very category of Hungarian Jewish literature. It is in this context that the lecturer will discuss the works of Nobel laureate Imre Kertész.
The program is oraganized by the Central European University Jewish Studies Project.
Ivan Sanders is Professor Emeritus of English at Suffolk College, SUNY, and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's East Central European Center. He has also taught at the New School University, the Central European University and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He is the prize-winning translator (Füst Milán Prize, Déry Tibor Prize, Soros Translation Award) of works by George Konrád, Péter Nádas, Péter Esterházy, Miklós Mészöly, Ádám Bodor and others. His studies and essays on Jewish literary topics have appeared in Judaism, Jewish Social Studies, Soviet Jewish Affairs, The Hungarian Quarterly, Múlt és Jövő and other journals.
Harvey Belovski grew up in London and attended University College, Oxford, from where he has a degree in mathematics. He subsequently studied for seven further years, first at Gateshead Yeshivah, from where he has Semichah, and then at the Gateshead Beis HaTalmud Kolel. Between 1997 and 2003, he was the spiritual leader of two communities near to London - first Loughton and Chigwell, then Ilford Federation. Since 2003, he has been rabbi of the Golders Green Synagogue in London. As well as his rabbinical duties, Harvey Belovski teaches widely - giving regular classes at London synagogues, outreach organisations, Jewish schools, the students at Oxford University and beyond. He has recently been appointed executive director of the outreach organisation, 'Encounter', and is also the senior tutor of an outreach training institute, a dating counsellor and a popular speaker. He is the author of two books - a translation of the Chassidic classic Shem MiShmuel and The Shabbat Siddur Companion, and has written numerous articles for HaModia, the London Jewish Chronicle and other publications. He and his wife Vicki live in Golders Green with their five children.
Golders Green Synagogue is the oldest and largest synagogue in Golders Green, the community itself having been established some 90 years ago, soon after the first Jews moved into the area. It is a constituent member of the United Synagogue. Members of GGS represent the complete age and religious spectrum and are well provided for in terms of Shul services, social and educational activities, as well as welfare. The community runs daily services; regular, as well as four children's programmes on Shabbos, and attracts 200-250 on an average Shabbos morning. Most weeks, there are 3 or 4 shiurim, as well as other activities going on in the Shul for all ages.

The Daf Yomi movement was launched many years ago with the aim of encouraging its participants to study a full page (daf) each day from one of Judaism's most interesting and essential religious and cultural sources, the Talmud. The main pedagogical goal of the programme has been to popularize in wider circles the less frequently studied pages of the Talmud. Its other central aim has been to create, via the joint study programme, an intellectual community among Jews in different parts of the world. It is with the purpose of taking the first step in integrating Hungarian Jewry into this intellectual community that Pesti Shul decided to organize its first ever Talmud study day. By studying one Talmudic leaf a day, one can complete the whole of the Talmud in seven years. It is on March 1st 2005 that the present seven-year study cycle will be completed and festivities are to be held in Jewish communities all over the world on this special occasion. On Sunday March 6th, in honour of the worldwide Siyum (completion festivities), Pesti Shul organizes a one-day event dedicated to the various forms of Talmudic study.
